Pursuing democratic principles, if they are driven by commitment to mediating values, has great potential to contribute to the success of post-conflict transitions.
While human rights do challenge state sovereignty, they do so mainly at the conceptual level. In practice their capacity to interfere with states’ domestic affairs is severely limited.
It would be beneficial to free the concept of democracy of its territorial, state-bound constraints and work toward a more democratic global order, but a new global structure is not feasible.
